Itsukushima Shrine (Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture) A magnificent shrine floots on the water, in harmony with its natural surroundings Made Governor of the province then known as 'Aki' during the Heian period (794-1185), the great warlord Taira no Kiyomori (1118-1181) made improvements to the existing Itsukushima Shrine, creating a sight unique in all the world, a structure that appears to float on the waves. It is said that behind the brilliant idea of making the sea into the temple approach, over and above the island itself (also known as 'Miyajima' or 'Shrine Island') being held sacred and thus no building being allowed there, was Kiyomori's great ambition of encouraging trade with Song-dynasty China. He wished with this shrine to demonstrate the renewal of the country and its c...

Japan travel guide to what to do and eat in Miyajima, Hiroshima in a day! Hiroshima is near the bottom of the main island Honshu and a must visit when coming to Hiroshima is the island Itsukushima, more popularly known as Miyajima. It’s one of Japan’s top 3 scenic sights, most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. Miyajima island is also a great place for a day trip from the Kansai region like Kyoto and Osaka but I would recommend staying in Hiroshima for a few days to explore Hiroshima city and another day for Miyajima island. I started my trip off at Hiroshima station and took a 25 minute train ride to JR Miyajima-guchi station. From there it’s less than a 5 minute walk to the ferry terminal where you will take a 10 minute ferry ride to go t...

Hiroshima's okonomiyaki is its best known regional specialty. A savoury layered "pancake" of noodles, cabbage, pork and many other ingredients, it's a must-try for any visitor to the city. In this episode I visit Yagenbori Hassho - known to locals as the famous "Blue Hassho" - which many say is the city's best, and learn how to eat okonomiyaki like a Hiroshima local.
Memories of a three-week railway journey through Japan developed into a fascinating short film. Filmmakers Vincent Urban, Alex Schiller, and Alex Tank zoomed through Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Kyoto and experienced a culture that somehow balances rich tradition with a very futuristic present. 2nd August 2016 This year Neil and I took a trip to Japan for 2 weeks, going to Tokyo, Fuji, Kyoto, Nara, Hemiji, Hiroshima and then back to Tokyo.... Here are our Adventures! Today we explored the beautiful and hard hitting city of Hiroshima! Thanks to Eric Taylor for the music (TraditionalJapanese)
Flying over Tokyo was the best welcoming card we could get. As we landed in Narita Airport, we couldn’t wait to explore the bustling capital of Japan. It’s neon-lit skyscrapers shoulder to shoulder with buddhist temples and cherry blossom trees define the country. From the concrete streets of Tokyo and the temples of Kyoto to the port city of Nagasaki, a dance between the ultramodern and the traditional is always there. A ride in the Shinkansen from the island of Honshu to the Kyushu revealed more than the guide book Japan. Over the course of 16 days we dined with locals in Fukuoka, explored caves amidst the crashing waves in Enoshima and played with friendly deers in Miyajima island. Enjoy.
